Showers and Water

Some of the old-timers will remember the days of running after the water trucks naked to get a nice blast of cold water to wash off the dust. I myself ran behind those trucks in a frenzy and I remember how cool and refreshing that water felt in the middle of a blazing hot afternoon back in the day. Those days are long gone. There has been a lot of public education since then about the fact that the water coming out of those trucks isn't potable, or "drinkable" and therefore unsafe for consumption, which includes seeping through your skin and your exposed nether regions.

If you've ever set up your own shower system on playa, you had to figure out how to  deal with the grey water. Many people set up evap ponds to evaporate the water in the heat of the day, sometimes that works well, and other times, well, not so much. Showers on playa are a huge bonus, a luxury, and one not to be taken for granted.

Luckily for us, OC9 Veteran Bob "O"  designed a shower that is accessible for OC9 camp members to use. It must be used with great respect, sparingly, and with the understanding that every drop of water that gets used, has been trucked in and must be trucked out, creating a huge foot-print and cost for the Org. For that reason, I would like to remind folks to be "radically self-reliant" by using baby wipes(that's the tried and true way to stay clean on the daily out there) in between shower days. Priority for showers goes to those working shifts. If you are not working a shift, embrace the dust, be one with it, take a pit stop sponge bath, and know that you are loved. We are all in it together.

If you are driving to the event, please consider bringing your own solar shower bag that you can fill with your water and bring with you to the shower for use, this will help keep people within the 2 gallon/shower range and help reduce our fresh water usage, making us over achievers and shining lights in the eyes of the (L)or(d)g.
