So this is the guy right here. This is Gorbu. Some of you may recognize him from last year. He has taken on a very vital, yet challenging role for us this year, he is our Placement Coordinator. This means that he will be laying out our camp, trying to meet the needs and special accommodations of everyone camped in our allotted space. Please be flexible and kind. We must all co-habitate in close quarters and trying conditions. Your patience, compassion, and willingness to adjust accordingly will serve you well. Having said that, if you have any special needs, out of the ordinary requests, certain considerations, or questions about Placement within Oc9, you can reach out to Gorbu directly.

Also, some of you were vague or unsure what your camp structure would be, what your foot print would look like or how much space you would need. This is CRITICAL information for Gorbu as he is tasked with fitting everyone in "comfortably", trying to place RV's with generators in a way that allows for tenters to be free of exhaust fumes, creating wind blocks etc. Please communicate clearly with Gorbu about your footprint, generators,  and special requests by emailing him here:

gorbubrc2016@gmail.com

Here's a little more about Gorbu, in his own words:

Starting with Fertility 2.0 in 2012, this will make my 6th Burn. The first three were camping with a mostly Seattle based group affectionately known as Bubble Bubble, although the camp names were Camp Pucker Up, MushLove, and Burning Bubbles. I almost didn't come the first year because the idea of Burning Man was fairly intimidating to me, but after a day, I got in touch with the whitewater raft guide I once was and suddenly I was Home. My wife was there that first year along with a couple of our best friends. The second year she didn't come but my 18 year old son did. The third year, we bought our T@B trailer and she had a dark, cool, and theoretically quieter space to hang out in during the day which made Burning Man possible for her. The fourth year, she joined ESD and the Rangers and we both joined OC9. After a year of being arm candy, I decided to join EDS last year and now we are returning once more. In the Default World, I manage a CO2 laser manufacturer doing really cool things that I mostly can't talk about. And bide my time to go Home!
Bubble Bubble!

We are so lucky to have him and his amazing wife, Rebecca(Sparklebitch) camping with us again!!!

Logistics is being headed up again by Buna Bear, more about him later after I wrangle him for some personal info and find out myself "exactly" what he does.................hmm.
Well, two out of three ain't bad. Most of you will remember Eric, he cooked for OC9 for six years. Unfortunately, he is unable to make it this year due to real life commitments. Never fear though, Nick, pictured here on the right, is coming back to lead the crew, along with Sundara "Sin" Griffiths and lucky for us, Nick secured a completely new virgin sacrifice, I mean recruit, with loads of experience and enthusiasm, Jay Flanery coming to us from the great state of New York. These guys have all been working hard on the menu to provide us with a multi-sensory delicious experience to enhance our already brilliant excursions on the Playa. Please show them some love, they work extremely hard, from sun up until into the evening. In an effort to get to know them better, here's a little about each of them and why they're crazy enough to do this.

Returning camp chef Nicholas Givens, from the East Bay, California, currently residing in New York City. My mom managed restaurants around Contra Costa and Alameda County when I was very young, my first memories are dotted with Restaurant supply warehouses, large stainless steel commercial ovens and mixers, and flames touching the ceiling from the Saute station. I found that this is where my employment path would also start when I was Fifteen, doing prep and washing dishes, and in a couple years had a cooking position at the local vegetarian restaurant. I stayed in the kitchen until I was 25, and still cook (in the take-out-empire state) everyday, and have found that while traveling, or starting in a new place, searching out new ingredients and local culinary methods is the most immediate way I can learn about it. I regard cooking for myself, and for others, in a restaurant or at home, just as much a science as an art, and look forward to doing it again with y'all  at OC9 2017!

My name is Sunny, short for Sundara, but you can call me Sin. Originally from Northern California, I spent a stint of time in New Orleans exploring and developing my palette for all things Cajun. I'm definitely a free spirit, an artist sharing my perception of life, love, and adventure through my brush, pencil or pen. I love to travel and will soon be heading out on a five month journey to New Zealand, so if you have any words of wisdom for the solo traveler, or know the best places to visit there, help a sister out.

I don't have a picture of Jay yet, so I'll post this busy bee instead. This is what Jay has to say,

"At 17, I started in your average franchise-fried-chicken-quick-service restaurant which struck my interest in the fast-paced work environment that the BOH has, eventually moving on to a local, high volume bar and grill with a VERY large menu with usual grill and deli fare. Here I was able to learn a lot more about prioritizing and working with a larger variety of menu items. Two years later, I found myself at a breakfast and lunch spot where we focused on a made-from-scratch menu sourcing local ingredients for our "Southern Fun Dining" experience. I worked my way up to the sister restaurant that was easily the busiest place I've ever worked that was a Southwestern Casual Fine Dining spot and, at 21, became the youngest cook to make it onto the line. After a while I decided to move on to Hugh Acheson's restaurant 5&10. I thoroughly enjoyed learning the French style cuisine here, but was eventually offered the Kitchen Manager position at the only Brewpub here where I was able to have more creative control as well as take on the challenge of cleaning up a bit of a mess that was left from previous management. I was able to bring the health score from a 81 to a 96 and cut a 40% food cost in half. Then a New American Restaurant focusing on Charcuterie opened up and I had to get in on it. I worked here for a little over two years, learning about curing and smoking meats. I am now working at a fun bar fare restaurant on a rooftop (the view is what sold me) where we make everything in house (all bread, bacothe, hot sauce, etc...) The positions I have always been strongest with are Grill and Middle/Expo.)

Fun fact about me! I have a Bill & Ted tattoo that says, "Be Excellent to Each Other" on my thigh that was the first image on Google if you searched "Bill and Ted Tattoo" for a while.

My spirit animal is probably a wolf. I try to approach things with a majestic approach and am not afraid to take a leadership role, but I am also always respectful and attentive to whomever is leading me.

Favorite dish is always hard to choose, but if I were to be offered a "last meal", then I'd probably go with Crab Rangoon. Can't get enough of that stuff."

And there you have it! Please give a warm welcome to these 3 as they will be handling all of your food :)

Everyone in camp is required to work "OC9 Shifts". We realize this is a work camp and most of you are already working ESD shifts, so for this reason, we have amended the shift requirements.

If you NOT an ESD volunteer and staying in camp with us, we ask that you sign up for 3 camp shifts for the week(2 of them must be MOOP or Dishwashing) please. (This still only totals about 6 hours which is the equivalent of ONE shift most everywhere else on Playa). This is a great way to support your ESD host and help out since they are already working several shifts of their own.

Almost all of the Camp Shifts are 2 hours to keep it to a minimum, the only exception are the kitchen prep shifts which are 3 for continuity( but you are usually sitting down snacking throughout, so it's okay)

In addition, we need as many people as possible Mooping on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday at the end of the event. If you are staying through those days, please let Tigerlily know as that's when the biggest push is needed, your efforts will be rewarded. Thank
You!

ESD volunteers can sign up for one shift of their choice.

Espresso Shifts run from 7-10am Daily
Sunday to Sunday

To sign up for Espresso Shifts, email Shimmer @

screwbug@gmail.com

and indicate which day you'd like to work( bonus, unlimited Espresso while you're Pimping Caffeine to the masses).

So excited to announce that it's finally happening!! The OC9 Juice Bar coming straight to you Behind Station Nine. What's better than a cool and refreshing smoothie mid morning in the hot dust? How about a super green protein shake to get your day started? The options are endless, but like everything else at the Bar, this relies on donations and people power to make it happen. We have 2 dedicated blenders to use and a captive audience of parched customers.

The Juice Bar will be open daily from 10-12pm (at the OC9 Bar) and there are Juice Bar shifts if nourishing your camp mates with delicious organic juice, vegetables and healthy supplements is your true calling. I'm bringing a variety of protein powders, Hemp, Maca, Cacao, Spirulina, Moringa Powder, Chia Seeds, and a splendid organic 14 mushroom medley that increases energy and stamina and supports the adrenals (it's great in coffee too). If this sounds like something you'd like, please consider bringing any of  the following:

Organic fruit and vegetable juices
Frozen Fruit and Berries (pack on dry ice)
Protein Powders and "green" powders
Aloe
Coconut Water
Nut Milks
Or anything that goes great in a smoothie.

I am working on a small dedicated box freezer for this project. Do you have one you can bring? They can be found on Craigslist often for $75 or less, But I have no way of getting it to the playa, shout out if  you can help with this one. Thank you!

Lucky for us, we have an Espresso angel in camp, Mink, who every year generously brings his Espresso machine to share in camp. There's nothing finer than a jolt of Caffeine to get you going in the morning after a long hard night. It does take some coordination though, and a few donations to keep the brew flowing.

If you plan on partaking in some of this coffee berry goodness, please consider signing up for an espresso shift in the morning. These shifts will run 3 hours, from 7-10am every morning and you will be trained. To sign up, follow the instructions on the "Camp Shifts" page. I hear you can drink unlimited Espresso on your shift.

This venture also requires donations of "espresso coffee". Mink says the best to bring is WHOLE BEAN DARK ROAST, distilled water, and perhaps a little cream if that's how you like it.

There's so many ways to enjoy espresso, what's your favorite? With a shot of Irish Whiskey?

i Mink will train you on how to make the perfect cuppa goodness, so no worries if barista isn't on your Resume.

If you are the type that likes to try new things, you can make a "Hippie Speedball" by adding some Canna-infused coconut oil to your cup and swirling it around, better than bullet proof and loaded with anti-oxidants, just ask for the "wellness special" when the window is open. Cry Havoc!

Oooh. Fresh ground Dark Roast Coffee
Every day at 4pm to kick off Happy Hour, we'll have a Raffle. You DO NOT need to be present to win, so if you're working a shift, no worries. Everyone's name will go in the jar and we'll pull from it daily giving everyone the opportunity to win. On Friday, we will hit reset and all names will be put back in the jar so everyone has a chance to win some special prizes at our Luau Party and on Burn Day.

We need fun donations for the Raffle, and if you're an artist, maker, inventor, cobbler, welder, jeweler, or otherwise make things with your hands, please consider donating an item that shows off your unique skills or talent. We'd love to see it!  Donations should be Playa friendly(not overly Moopy). There is no price limit, do what you want to here, maybe think about something nicer than what can be gifted en masse, something crazy cool, or extra special, super freaky, a crazy thrift store find, some super stellar light up thingie, or something beyond schwagalicious.( I just made that word up, but I love it).
Obviously, more donations equals more chances to win and ensures that everyone leaves with some magic to remember the OC9 love back in Defaultia.

Who would not love to wear this?

I'd like to introduce our OC9 Safety Officer, Sean Irwin. He'll be making sure that we are in compliance with the Org Safety rules and regulations. If you are bringing gasoline for a generator(or for any other reason), using power cords, slinging fire poi, using rebar, setting up tripping hazards, or any other number of potentially hazardous  things, expect a visit from this guy. In an effort to make sure everyone is prepared with no under the cover of darkness surprises, please read these guidelines from the Burning Man Org. We will be complying with all of them like the law abiding citizens we are :)

Here's a little more about Sean in his own words:

"Sean here.... little Bio.  I have been a Firefighter Paramedic for almost 25 years in Idaho and Washington.  This will be burn number 5 and fifth year with OC9.  I work ESD Fire but camping at Medical Camp 9 is the perfect fit.  This year I will be keeping an eye on safety making sure we don't burn what isn't supposed to burn.  I can't wait to get back to camp and see everyone!"

In addition, I asked Sean if he had any personal safety tips and his response was enlightening:

"Safety Tips? COMMON SENSE! Most Burners are actually veterans at camping and the out doors, but "high density" camping does change a few things. Trip hazards for the tent stakes and rope are very common at Burning Man. Light and soften your rebar"

I hope you will all take the time to read some of the info that applies to you below, as an ESD Camp, our Safety preparation and standards should exceed the average camp out there. Le'ts be prepared!

I

So for the new OC9 campers, in case you haven't heard, we have a stunning swimming pool every year, the envy of the Playa really. There's no better way to cool down after a long hard day in the dust than diving into the cool clear waters of a Playa Pool.

Even some of the "wildlife" at Burning Man has gotten word and occasionally tries to sneak in. Heads up! And don't forget to bring your favorite floatie, there's some pretty stunning floaties to be found out there these days.
Bonus points for Unicorns!!
If anyone has any craft supplies they'd like to share, or has a skill they want to teach in camp, we'd love to have you bring it. I will have a huge Plastic tub to leave in our Chill Space with fun stuff for when creativity strikes. If you want to lead a workshop or teach a class, let me know and I can add it to our Scheduled Events.

I am bringing a huge bag of recycled bike tube tires that have been cut and washed for making bracelets, or whatever you want. They're super easy and I love them, I get so many compliments when I wear mine. Leather would be a nice addition, if anyone has some nice leather scraps, please bring them, we can use them for so many things. I'll also have some beads and stringing supplies. Also, if you have a snap tool and snaps, please bring them, you can never have too many. What would you want to make? anything in particular? Let's make it happen.
